Egypt is a wonderful country. It’s awash with ancient history, is home to some of the best holiday resorts anywhere in the world and has huge desert and underwater areas perfect for exploration.
But everyone does the same. Visitors flock to the pyramids, the Sphinx, cruise along the Nile or do a little diving beneath the surface of the Red Sea. This all sounds perfect and has the makings of a great holiday.
Paros Island lies in the Cyclades group of islands in the Aegean Sea of Greece. The port of Parikia is one of the busiest in the vicinity. At the height of the summer season, dozens of massive ships and ferries berth daily, off-loading tourists by the hundreds.
Arriving from sea and rounding the headland into the large, natural inlet of Parikia harbour, is an unforgettable sight. Far above the white-washed spread of the town, a series of hills fold across a blaze of blue sky; below, bays and coves carve into the shoreline edged with tavernas, chapels and fishing boats.
When one thinks of Holland (or correctly known as The Netherlands), one usually conjures up images of cheese, tulips, clogs and “coffee “shops. However, while living there for 5 years I became intimate with this amazing country. Now, when I think of going back to The Netherlands, I think ART!
Back packing was never something I planned on doing. It simply evolved as an easy option for moving around the Greek Islands – negotiating slippery cobblestones, ferries on turbulent voyages and finding accommodation around harbours and convoluted village lanes.
Being hands free on these occasions was always a bonus, especially for an inexperienced traveller such as I in those first days of travel.
